Gareth Coombes Founder

Gareth Coombes

Founder & Educational Consultant

I began my career 42 years ago as a passionate and successful primary school teacher and became a headteacher by the age of 33. Wishing to extend my highly effective organisational and influencing skills, I moved into senior advisory roles within several local authorities. This included leading the Primary Team in the highly achieving Newport LA Advisory Service, where I led a great team of experts in supporting schools to raise standards and improve teaching and learning — work that received national recognition. As an inspector of many years, I have an extensive understanding of both the Ofsted and Estyn frameworks, giving me valuable insights into educational quality and accountability.

I regularly present at regional, national and international conferences and events, sharing expertise in school improvement, leadership and educational development.

My most recent focus has been on creating sector-leading resources that align tightly to the relevant inspection framework, to empower schools with self-evaluation and school improvement and to give them both confidence and success in leading their inspections.

Alongside my professional achievements, I have a wide range of personal interests including environmental work, diving, pétanque and skiing, reflecting my enthusiasm for both adventure and community engagement.

With nearly 30 years in education, including 17 years as a headteacher, 20 as an inspector and 6 as a lead inspector, I bring deep, sector-wide expertise to supporting schools on their self-evaluation journey. Having worked across five local authorities, I have developed a strong track record in building healthy professional relationships, leading curriculum transformation, strengthening teaching, and embedding purposeful assessment for learning that raises standards. My work continues to focus on helping schools develop skilful, context-driven self-evaluation processes that align with the Inspection framework to directly inform school development priorities.

Duncan & Gintas

Team

We look a bit older now. Duncan and Gintas first started working together on edtech around 20 years ago — Duncan a secondary school teacher (16 years in total in the classroom), Gintas a 19-year-old studying machine learning and AI at the University of Edinburgh. They went on to co-found Edukey Education, the UK’s fastest-growing edtech company and a BETT Award winner for Company of the Year. Two decades on, they’re still building software that teachers and leaders want to use.
